I for one however, do not care if GameStop were to fold up and die. I don't feel strongly one way or another about the life or death of used games.

Re: Kinect Star Wars demo

As a Kinect game I enjoy it. It's got a few quirks, but I've never had any of the "major control issues" everyone lists in their reviews. The jedi campaign is pretty good for being on rails, the podracing is fun (though your arms will get tired), but the real gem is being a rancor. That's so much fun with friends. The dancing is well done, too, and makes a great in-game self-joke. It's actually fun, but I'd recommend playing it with two players. Every mode (except maybe dancing, haven't tried) is available in local co-op.

Re: The $99 Xbox 360 program is official and exclusive to Microsoft Stores

I really hope this isn't how the next generation will work.

Re: Kinect Star Wars demo

What do you think of the game since you said you disagree with the review? Totally disagreed with the review (I own the game), but it'll be interesting to see whether a quality demo can drum up additional sales. It seems like everyone is running for the hills because you can dance. It's like "George Lucas ruined my childhood" all over again.

Re: Weekend Rant: Why Durango’s exclusion of used games would be good

Personally I wouldn't mind that (although I do like having physical discs), but I think there are too many areas without good enough access to high speed internet for this to be viable. How much would someone who doesn't really care to spend dozens of hours honing their own virtual creations enjoy Minecraft? Serious question.

Re: Weekend Rant: Why Durango’s exclusion of used games would be good

Publishers are getting more creative, sometimes to the detriment of of the consumer, by offering the day one DLC and of course the use of a code that is only good for one use from a retail purchase. For instance I just received Infamous 2 ( ok not a Kinect title ) but you get special mission access and ongoing DLC access that opens up on future dates. I will have to go into a Gamestop and see if this is available for purchase separately, but my hunch is that it is not.

Re: Weekend Rant: Why Durango’s exclusion of used games would be good

This is somewhat viable because of the advent of Games on Demand. If everything is available digitally there won't be as much reason to seek out used copies of older games. The real question will revolve around the pricing structure for the older games. As it is most GoD remain full price which is silly. If we take away the incentive to trade in relatively new games people will hold on to them and potentially even buy more DLC. But, there is only so much $$$ in the system. If people can't trade in their old games to get credit to buy a new one then players will have to be more descriminating with their purchases. We will see more studios closing and even less "risks" being taken. My guess, in a world with no trade ins Rayman Origins never gets made.

Re: Weekend Rant: Why Durango’s exclusion of used games would be good

My first response to this argument is, how's the movie industry doing in terms of quality? It's doing just fine. Look back at games; Bayonetta, Mirror's Edge, Crackdown, Shadows of the Damned, L.A. Noire, Bulletstorm, Enslaved, Catherine, Demon/Dark Souls, Vanquish... there's still new/exciting IP without crappy multiplayer tacked on (even if it's not quite up to Psychonauts' level of off-kilter).

All creative industries have to grapple with second hand sales and the videogame industry, rather than tackling it with any finesse, has chosen to point the finger at gamers and, at its most forward-thinking, attach ill thought out multiplayer components (Ninja Gaiden 3? Christ) and online codes. Not that I have the answer, but I wouldn't blame the people buying my products and whine that, 200,000 second hand sales = 200,000 first hand sales lost. It's not true. And it's not the guy who's selling Ninja Gaiden 3 for $10 fault that Team Ninja thought multiplayer was a good idea.

Perhaps the new Xbox will block out second hand sales, but I very much doubt it. That's a potentially large customer base that isn't going to be spending money on DLC, on Xbox Live Gold subscriptions, on XBLA games, on avatar items, on Kinect and Zune and Netflix and so on. Gamestop aren't going to be the least bit happy and what if Sony suddenly announce that they're cool with the second hand market? Suicide.

Anyway, I'd say Schafer's doing alright with things like Stacking and Costume Quest and the emergence of Steam/PSN/XBLA/iOS has provided a green pasture for developers jaded by the current state of retail development. There's certainly no shortage of new and exciting IP in those spaces.

Re: Weekend Rant: Why Durango’s exclusion of used games would be good

Personally I feel like we would be trading one evil for another...

Re: Microsoft to unveil “Woodstock” at E3

Ugh.
